First Fall

We have been enjoying Little Man’s first fall experience. Today he was fascinated by the chill in the air and the wind in his face. He loves when the furnace kicks on (it does make a pretty fun little noise!). We went to a pumpkin patch/apple orchard a few weeks ago. However, it was 80 degrees out on the day, and we opted not to ride the hay wagon (with no shade) all the way out to the pumpkin patch (with no shade) and wait while twenty dozen kids decided which pumpkin they just had to have (with no shade).

But I did buy a bag of splendor apples. Oh. My. Goodness. They are so sweet I made applesauce and didn’t have to add any sugar. If you taste it, it tastes like I added three pounds of sugar, but nope! I only added cinnamon!

For Halloween Little Man is dressing up like a zebra. A friend had a whole box of free costumes given to her by another friend. We decided the zebra was too cute to pass up. We’re supposed to be going to the zoo this evening for its Halloween festivities; however, it’s still awfully windy and chilly, so I haven’t fully made up my mind. I’m going as a mommy 🙂

Little Man had another ear infection last week. I’m hoping this isn’t a sign that we’re going to need to put tubes in his ears. Plus he’s cutting FOUR teeth. Three of them have finally poked through (not much, but enough that I think it counts as eruption). You can imagine, I’m sure, if you have a young one, what the combination of ear infection (which is caused by a cold virus) and teething does to a child’s mucus.

Thank God for saline spray, the suction bulb, the humidifier and boogie wipes.

Today is probably the first day is two weeks he’s felt like his normal self. We finished ten days of antibiotics last night. His teething tablets were recalled (grrrr….) so I’m not sure how I feel about those, but infant tylenol has been our friend.

He has decided he hates taking medicine, however. So for a few days, we’d strap him into his high chair and rock it back and forth (which he loved) and then tip it way back and squirt in the medicine. Then that quit working. I finally mixed it into his flavored yogurt yesterday – that worked!!

Tomorrow friends of ours are having their annual fall festival/ chili pitch in. We’ll spend all day at their house (probably outside). There’s a burn ban in Indiana, because we haven’t had any mentionable rain since like June, so no bonfire. Bummer. But we will have a “drive in” movie projected on the back of their house, popcorn and apple cider. Plus plenty of games for the kiddos and things like pumpkin carving/painting and target practice for adults!

Sunday we are going trick-or-treating in my parents’ neighborhood. Obviously LM can’t really understand trick or treat yet, but he’s going to look so cute, and we know most of their neighbors. I think it will be a great intro to Halloween for our little guy.

So that’s what we’ve been up to so far this fall!! I will leave you with a picture from our trip to the orchard!

  1. What a Cutie Patootie! And I don't blame you not hitting the zoo, we went last night, and it was Cold. But we had a good time! Either way is wise. I usually “dress up” as a tourist, chasing Mickey Mouse or Buzz Lightyear around with my camera. 😉
